The American School in London — universally abbreviated as "ASL" — was founded in 1951 in response to the substantial growth of American diplomatic, military and corporate families posted to London in the years immediately after the Second World War. The school was originally chartered with the support of the United States Embassy in London as the official American school for embassy and US-government families, and it was the principal American school in the United Kingdom throughout the second half of the twentieth century. The school operates today as an independent non-profit governed by an American board of trustees, with no current formal Embassy connection but continuing to serve as the principal American international school in London.
The school operates on a purpose-built urban campus at Loudoun Road in St John's Wood, NW8 — one of the most expensive residential districts of central London, immediately north of Regent's Park and Lord's Cricket Ground. The campus was redeveloped in 2014-15 in a major £93 million reconstruction. The school educates around 1,445 pupils ages 3-18 representing more than 60 nationalities, although the majority remain American or American-dual-national. The Head of School is Robin Appleby.
The school is accredited by NEASC (New England Association of Schools and Colleges) — the principal accrediting body for elite American independent schools — alongside CIS, MSA and ECIS. The curriculum follows the full American High School Diploma model with around 30+ Advanced Placement courses available, and graduates progress overwhelmingly to top US universities. ASL's annual placement record at the most selective American universities — Harvard, Princeton, Yale, Stanford, MIT, Columbia, the Williams/Amherst/Pomona axis of liberal-arts colleges — is among the very highest of any school worldwide. A substantial minority of graduates progress to top UK universities, particularly via the British / American dual-citizenship pathway.
The school operates a substantial financial aid programme for families on international relocation packages, with around 15% of pupils receiving some form of financial aid. ASL's tuition fees are among the highest of any UK independent school but reflect both the urban St John's Wood real estate and the substantial American expatriate parent-body.
