Trinity School of John Whitgift was founded in 1596 by John Whitgift, the Archbishop of Canterbury, as part of his Whitgift Foundation — the charitable trust that also owns and operates Whitgift School. The same Whitgift Foundation that founded both schools continues to govern them today, providing common funding through City of London-derived endowment income. The two schools have operated on separate but linked sites in Croydon for over 425 years.
Trinity today is a predominantly boys' day school with co-educational sixth form, educating around 1,049 pupils on a campus at Shirley Park in south Croydon. The Head Master is Alasdair Kennedy. The school is a member of the HMC.
Trinity is particularly known nationally and internationally for the Trinity Boys' Choir — one of the most prominent school choirs in England, which has provided boy choristers for recordings, opera-house performances and major concert-hall appearances for several decades. Trinity choristers have sung on the original cast recordings of musicals, BBC Christmas concerts, Glyndebourne and English National Opera productions, and major film soundtracks. The Choir's musical-director tradition runs through several internationally significant English choral conductors.
The school's broader academic provision is strong, with sciences and modern languages particularly well-supported. The Whitgift Foundation's substantial endowment funds means-tested bursaries across both Trinity and its sister Whitgift School. The school's Old Trinitarians alumni list includes a steady cohort of professional choral musicians (many of whom trained in the Trinity Boys' Choir before moving on to King's College, Cambridge or the Royal Academy of Music), senior figures across UK media and finance, and senior civil servants.

The Trinity School of John Whitgift, also known as Trinity School, is an independent boys' day school with a co-educational sixth form, located in Shirley Park, Croydon. Part of the Whitgift Foundation, it was established in 1882 as Whitgift Middle School and was a direct grant grammar school from 1945 until 1968, when it left the scheme. The present name was adopted in 1954, to avoid confusion with Whitgift School. The school's head is now a member of the Headmasters' and Headmistresses' Conference (HMC).
The school's first home was in Church Road, central Croydon, and then from 1931 to 1965 it was at North End, Croydon, in the old premises of Whitgift School, which moved to Haling Park, South Croydon. The "romantic Gothic towers and verdant lawns" at North End, a building of historical significance, dominated the area, but in 1968 the whole edifice was torn down for redevelopment, despite public opposition. Today, the Whitgift Centre stands on the site, in a modernist contrast to the old building.
