Wellington School in Somerset was founded in 1837 as a Methodist boys' boarding school in the West Country market town of Wellington, Somerset. The school should not be confused with the more famous Wellington College in Berkshire (founded 1859 as the national memorial to the Duke of Wellington) — the Somerset Wellington School is an independent Methodist foundation in the West Country tradition, taking its name from the town in which it sits rather than from the Duke. The Head is Eugene du Toit.
The school operates today on a 30-acre rural campus in central Wellington, Somerset, at the foot of the Blackdown Hills. The school is co-educational ages 3-18 with around 861 pupils across an integrated Pre-Prep, Junior and Senior School structure. The school is a member of the HMC and the Boarding Schools Association and continues the Methodist Independent Schools Trust relationship.
The school's academic profile is mid-tier West Country independent — solid A-Level results, broad-access tuition fees, and a strong family/local-community ethos reflecting the Methodist founding values. The school's geographic position in the West Country, between Taunton and Exeter, produces a particularly strong feeder relationship to the University of Exeter alongside the standard Russell Group and Oxbridge pipeline.
The school operates a substantial bursary programme via the Methodist Independent Schools Trust, intended to provide educational access for Somerset and West Country families regardless of family means, maintaining the founders' Methodist principle of educational access regardless of family wealth.
