Charterhouse was founded in 1611 in the Charterhouse in London, and moved in 1872 to a 250-acre Surrey estate in Godalming. About 850 pupils aged 13-18, with around 70% boarding. Originally a boys' school, Charterhouse went co-ed at sixth form in 1971 and is fully co-educational across all year groups since 2021. The school runs both the IB Diploma and A-Level at sixth form — one of the strongest IB programmes in the UK alongside its A-Level cohort. Charterhouse is an HMC school and a member of the Rugby Group. Recent leavers' destinations include Oxford, Cambridge, Imperial, LSE, Princeton and the Ivies.

Charterhouse was founded in 1611 by Thomas Sutton — at the time the richest commoner in England — under the terms of his will, which endowed both a school for boys and a hospital for poor gentlemen on the site of the dissolved London Charterhouse monastery in Smithfield. Sutton was buried in the school chapel where his tomb still stands. The school operated in London for over 250 years before moving in 1872 to a 200-acre rural campus at Godalming, Surrey, where it has been ever since. It was named in the Clarendon Commission of 1864 as one of the "Nine Great Schools" of England (with Eton, Harrow, Winchester, Westminster, St Paul's, Merchant Taylors', Shrewsbury and Rugby).
Charterhouse remained a boys-only boarding school for over four centuries and became fully co-educational only in 2021. Today it educates around 996 pupils with a substantial boarding population. The Headmaster is Alex Peterken.
Charterhouse is significant in three distinct cultural histories. First, it is the original codifier of one of the two principal forms of association football: the "dribbling game" played at Charterhouse and adopted as the basis of the Football Association rules in 1863 (as opposed to the "handling game" later codified as rugby). Second, it is the birthplace of Genesis — the progressive rock band founded at the school in 1967 by Peter Gabriel, Mike Rutherford, Tony Banks and Anthony Phillips, whose subsequent solo and collective careers span Sledgehammer, In Your Eyes, the Invisible Touch and Selling England by the Pound albums. Third, it has produced extraordinary political and religious leaders: the long-serving Prime Minister Lord Liverpool (1812-27, who oversaw the defeat of Napoleon and the return of George IV); John Wesley, the founder of Methodism; and more recently the Conservative Cabinet ministers Jeremy Hunt and Ben Wallace.
The great Victorian novelist William Makepeace Thackeray (Vanity Fair) was a Carthusian boy and parodied his unhappy schooldays as Slaughterhouse in the novel. The composer Ralph Vaughan Williams (The Lark Ascending) was a Carthusian. The newspaper magnate Lord Beaverbrook attended briefly. Robert Baden-Powell, founder of the Boy Scout movement, was a pupil. The school operates a substantial bursary programme via the Charterhouse Foundation.
