Cheltenham Ladies' College was founded in 1853 as one of the first English boarding schools for girls. About 870 pupils aged 11-18 in the centre of Cheltenham, with around 75% boarding. The College runs both A-Level and IB Diploma at sixth form, with strong subject diversity including Classics, Mandarin, Music and Theatre. The school has produced senior leaders across UK politics, science and the arts, and remains one of the most academically selective girls' schools in the UK. The location in Regency Cheltenham (90 minutes from London by train) gives students a self-contained college quarter with chapel, theatre, sports complex and 11 boarding houses.

Cheltenham Ladies' College — universally abbreviated as "CLC" — was founded in 1853 as part of the mid-Victorian movement to provide academically rigorous education for girls. The school sits today on a 12-acre campus in central Cheltenham, Gloucestershire, with its principal building the grand Victorian Princess Hall (1898) the architectural centre of the school. CLC is girls-only, ages 11-18, with around 833 pupils and a substantial boarding population. The Principal is Eve Jardine-Young.
The school is a member of the GSA and the Boarding Schools Association and is inspected by the ISI. The school's historic transformation came under its second Principal, Dorothea Beale, who served as Principal from 1858 to 1906 and is among the most consequential nineteenth-century English educators. Beale established CLC as the leading academic girls' boarding school in England, set examinations on the model of the Oxford and Cambridge male universities, and founded St Hilda's College, Oxford (1893) as a sister institution to give CLC girls a route into the University of Oxford. Beale's portrait by Sir Hubert von Herkomer hangs in the school today.
CLC has produced a substantial range of distinguished modern alumnae. The founder of The Body Shop, Dame Anita Roddick, was a CLC girl in the 1950s. Two CLC Old Girls have won the Man Booker Prize: Dame Penelope Lively for Moon Tiger (1987) and Dame Anita Brookner for Hotel du Lac (1984). The actress Dame Joan Plowright — wife of Sir Laurence Olivier — was at CLC. The actress Jane Asher (former girlfriend of Paul McCartney during The Beatles' rise) was a Cheltenham Ladies' Old Girl, as was the 1990s socialite Tara Palmer-Tomkinson. Mary Soames, Baroness Soames — the daughter of Sir Winston and Clementine Churchill, who later wrote significantly on her parents — was a CLC girl.
The TV director Susanna White — Bleak House, Generation Kill (HBO), Our Kind of Traitor — was at CLC. Hannah Rothschild, the writer and former Chair of the National Gallery Trustees, was a CLC girl. The school operates a substantial bursary programme via the Cheltenham Ladies' College Charitable Foundation, with around 20% of pupils receiving some form of fee remission.
