Haileybury was founded in 1862 on a 500-acre Hertfordshire campus designed by William Wilkins (the same architect as London's National Gallery). About 870 students aged 11-18, with full and weekly/flexi boarding from Year 9. Distinct among the larger UK boarding schools for offering both A-Level and IB Diploma at sixth-form — letting families choose between UK and international university destinations. Recent A-Level cohorts have reported 83% A*/A grades, with leavers placing at Oxford, Imperial, UCL, Edinburgh, Bristol, Warwick, York and Duke. Haileybury was founded in 1862 on the site of the former East India College, the East India Company's training school for its civil servants. The Company's college had been built in 1806 by the architect William Wilkins (who later built University College London and the National Gallery) and was a magnificent Greek Revival quadrangle on a 500-acre rural site in Hertford, Hertfordshire. When the East India Company was wound up in 1858 following the Indian Rebellion of 1857, the buildings stood empty for four years until they were re-purposed as a new public school: Haileybury opened in 1862 with 500 boys. The Wilkins quadrangle, now Grade I listed, remains the architectural centre of the school today.
Haileybury merged in 1942 with the neighbouring Imperial Service College (a school founded specifically to prepare boys for Sandhurst and Dartmouth), retaining the Haileybury name. The combined school became co-educational in 1973 — among the first major HMC boys' boarding schools to admit girls. The Master is Martin Collier. The school is a member of the HMC and the Boarding Schools Association and is one of the substantial number of UK independents to offer the IB Diploma alongside A-Levels. Around 916 pupils, with a substantial boarding population, are educated ages 11-18.
Haileybury's most internationally significant alumnus is Clement Attlee, 1st Earl Attlee — Prime Minister of the United Kingdom from 1945 to 1951, founder of the modern British welfare state, creator of the National Health Service, nationaliser of the coal, rail, steel, gas and electricity industries, and grantor of independence to India in 1947 (the country his old school had once trained the civil servants of). Attlee won the largest popular-vote landslide in British political history in 1945 and is consistently ranked by historians as the most consequential British prime minister of the twentieth century after Churchill.
The playwright Sir Terence Rattigan CBE — whose The Browning Version, The Winslow Boy, French Without Tears and Separate Tables defined post-war English theatre — was a Haileybury boy. The Formula One driver Stirling Moss OBE — the sixteen-time Grand Prix winner widely regarded as the greatest driver never to win the World Championship — was educated at Haileybury. In military command, both Field Marshal Earl Allenby of Megiddo (the WWI commander who captured Jerusalem in 1917 and defeated the Ottoman Empire) and Field Marshal Lord Plumer (the Western Front commander) were Old Haileyburians. The actor Sir Christopher Lee CBE — Dracula, Saruman in The Lord of the Rings, Count Dooku in Star Wars — was at Haileybury. Lord Halifax, the appeasement-era Foreign Secretary who narrowly lost out to Churchill for the premiership in May 1940, was an Old Haileyburian.
The school operates a substantial bursary programme via the Haileybury Foundation.
