Marlborough College was founded in 1843 by a group of Church of England clergymen specifically to provide affordable boarding-school education for the sons of clergymen and Anglican professional families — a category of family that struggled to afford the existing public-school fees. The school sits today on a 300-acre rural campus in Marlborough, Wiltshire, on the historic chalk-downs Marlborough estate of the Seymour family (the family of Jane Seymour, third wife of Henry VIII, and the Dukes of Somerset). Marlborough became co-educational in 1968 — one of the very first major HMC boys' boarding schools in England to admit girls — and today educates around 1,004 pupils with a substantial boarding population. The Master is Louise Moelwyn-Hughes.
The school is a member of the HMC and the Boarding Schools Association. The 300-acre campus includes the historic Mound (an ancient hilltop earthwork, believed to be one of the few surviving Neolithic monumental constructions in the area, on the same scale as Silbury Hill), the Old Bath House (a Roman bath), a substantial Chapel (Grade II* listed), and very extensive boarding accommodation.
The school's most internationally famous alumna is Catherine, Princess of Wales (formerly Catherine Middleton, married 29 April 2011 to William, Prince of Wales, future King William V — and herself the future Queen of the United Kingdom). Princess Catherine attended Marlborough in the late 1990s and progressed to read history of art at the University of St Andrews, where she met the Prince.
Marlborough has produced an exceptional literary alumni list. Sir John Betjeman, the Poet Laureate from 1972 to 1984 — the great elegist of post-war English suburban life — was a Marlburian. Siegfried Sassoon, the WWI war poet of The Old Huntsman and Counter-Attack and the autobiographical Memoirs of a Fox-Hunting Man trilogy — was an Old Marlburian. Louis MacNeice, the Anglo-Irish poet of the MacSpaunday generation (with Auden, Spender and Day-Lewis), was a Marlborough boy.
The Victorian designer, socialist and founder of the Arts and Crafts movement William Morris — whose Morris & Co designs remain in production today and whose News from Nowhere is one of the founding texts of British socialism — was a Marlburian. Sir Anthony Blunt, the Surveyor of the Queen's Pictures unmasked in 1979 as the "Fourth Man" of the Cambridge Five Soviet spy ring, was at Marlborough. Chris Patten, Baron Patten of Barnes — the last British Governor of Hong Kong who handed the colony to China in 1997, later Chairman of the BBC Trust and Chancellor of the University of Oxford — was a Marlburian. The Hollywood actor James Mason (A Star is Born, North by Northwest, Lolita) was an Old Marlburian.
The school operates a substantial bursary programme via the Marlborough College Foundation.
