The curriculum is A-Level with strong support for the EPQ and a particularly distinguished engineering / design / technology programme via the Patrick Engineering Centre. Oundle School was founded in 1556 by Sir William Laxton — a Tudor merchant and Lord Mayor of London (1544-45) and Master of the Grocers' Company — under the trusteeship of the Worshipful Company of Grocers, which has governed the school for 470 years. Laxton endowed the school in the Northamptonshire market town of Oundle, where he had been born, and the school occupies substantial parts of the town centre on a 100-acre campus that extends down to the River Nene. The Head is Sarah Kerr-Dineen.
Oundle became co-educational in 1990 and today educates around 1,134 pupils with a substantial boarding population. The school is a member of the HMC and the Boarding Schools Association. Oundle is particularly distinguished by its design technology and engineering programme: the school's Patrick Engineering Centre is the largest school design technology department in the United Kingdom, with a teaching staff and workshop capability comparable to a small engineering faculty. This reflects a deliberate twentieth-century educational direction at Oundle, originally championed by the early-twentieth-century Headmaster F. W. Sanderson (1892-1922), who designed the curriculum specifically around "the engineering side" — the engineering and applied-science strand of public-school education.
Oundle's most internationally famous alumnus is Sir Peter Scott CBE — the naturalist who in 1961 founded the World Wildlife Fund (now World Wide Fund for Nature, WWF), the most successful global wildlife conservation organisation. Scott designed the WWF's panda logo personally. He was the only son of the Antarctic explorer Captain Robert Falcon Scott, whose 1912 expedition reached the South Pole second (after Roald Amundsen) and died on the return; his mother Kathleen Scott, the sculptress, raised him with the explicit Edwardian intent that he should be "a great naturalist."
Sir Cecil Lewis MC — the WWI Royal Flying Corps fighter pilot, co-founder of the BBC, and author of the canonical WWI flying memoir Sagittarius Rising — was an Old Oundelian. The novelist Will Self — The Book of Dave, Umbrella, the satirical novels of late-twentieth-century English social pathology — was at Oundle. The actor Stephen Mangan (Episodes, I'm Alan Partridge) was an Oundelian. Sir Ferdinand Mount — the head of Margaret Thatcher's Policy Unit, novelist and political writer for The Spectator — was at Oundle.
The school operates a substantial bursary programme via the Worshipful Company of Grocers.
